Akwa Ibom is preparing to elect a new governor and many are wondering who the next leader of the state will be. In a state that has long been led by one party, the high risk at stake is that of how to maintain the peace the state currently enjoys.

Before 2015, Akwa Ibom state was considered a hotspot for cultism and kidnapping. People lived in fear, and investors either left or moved their operations to neighbouring states like Rivers in other to secure their investments. But today, thanks to the efforts of Governor Udom Emmanuel, the state is currently ranked the lowest on Nigeria’s crime index and known as the most peaceful in the country today.

This success is mainly due to the “maintain peace” initiative instituted by the current state government. In the past 7 years, Governor Udom Emmanuel has refused to promote cultism but has rather chosen to pursue peace and security in the state. And this has brought incredible rewards to the State. Today Akwa Ibom has become home to some of the biggest brands you can mention in Nigeria. A count-down of these brands includes Nigerian Breweries Plc, Ibom Air, Jubilee Syringe, Kings Flour Mills, Norfin Offshore Yard and even the oil companies that had moved most of their operations out of the state have returned.

Also, asides from bringing back old and new investors to the state, this initiative has also encouraged a lot of indigenes to come back home. An outstanding example is that of Mr. IniEkong Charles Udonwa, Executive Chairman of Norfin Offshore Pte Ltd. In 2011, Udonwa, who was then a governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, narrowly escaped assassination and had to flee to Singapore. But his mother, a retired teacher, was not that lucky. She was kidnapped and killed, and her corpse was later desecrated and left by her abductors on the roadside. But today, IniEkong has come back home with a multimillion-dollar shipyard investment that employs more than 100 staff. Norfin Offshore Yard situated in Uruk Anam Local Area of Akwa Ibom has since commenced the building and delivery of ships to clients since 2021.

It is true that whoever wins the election in 2023 will have to navigate a complex political landscape to steer the state in the right direction. Although there are many challenges that need to be addressed, including improving infrastructure, creating jobs, and reducing poverty. There’s a need for continuity or Akwa Ibom might just descend back to the dark old days of terror and the gains of the Udom’s administration pushed into the dust-bin.

The primary direction for any government to take in building any state is to make the society peaceful and violent-free. Economic and political objectives can only be pursued successfully once this first-order need is met.

As Akwa Ibom state prepares to elect a new governor in 2023, it is important to remember that the success of these elections will have a far-reaching impact on the future of the state. The outgoing governor, Udom Emmanuel, has done a lot in terms of maintaining peace and security. He has set the stage for his successor.

However, there are many uncertainties surrounding the election, and it is important that we as supporters are cautious in our choice. This is not the time to seek zoning but to seek a man who when elected will work towards the maintenance of peace and security in the state. Do not be deceived in order to improve the state’s economy and provide for its citizens, the coming government must first entrench peace and security.
