It was an exciting day yesterday as seven students of Secondary Grammar School, Upenekang, Ibeno local government area who represented Akwa Ibom state at the just concluded Maltina National Schools Sports Championship and emerged winners, were received at Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo.
At the event, six female athletes won gold medals while the only male athlete among the contingent won the silver medal to qualify to represent Nigeria at International Championship in Beijing, China. One of the female athletes, Deborah Solomon Nko who participated in the long jump and high jump won a gold medal and bronze medal in the separate events.
Other members of the team were Celestina Stephen who won gold in Javelin, twin sisters Grace Martins, and Ruth Martins, Favour Emmanuel, and Esther Daniel who won the 4 x 100m relay race gold medal. Gideon David the only male member of the team also won a silver medal in the 400m race for boys.
During a brief stopover and reception at the residence of the Akwa Ibom State Technical Schools, Board member, Rt. Hon. Henry Ekpe Mkpe played host to them. He encouraged them to be focused so as to achieve more in life.
Attributing their success at the championship to God, the athletes said their trainer, Coach Effiong Ibok, and Game Master, Ekemini Okon were instrumental to their successes and also saw their achievements as good news for the state and Ibeno local government in particular.
They added that they have been inspired to do more exploits if offered the opportunity and promise to make the country proud at the international level.
It will be recalled that Coach Effiong Ibok in the past years, was also instrumental in the discovery of other athletes in the state, most prominent being Imaobong Uko who is now resident in the United States of America and also representing Nigeria on the international scene.
Meanwhile, the Akwa Ibom State Government will officially present the medals to the athletes within the week.
