Jose Peseiro’s reign as Super Eagles manager began this morning with a 2-1 defeat to El Tri of Mexico, North America’s football powerhouse, in a friendly match. Mexico vs Nigeria friendly is coming after Nigeria missed out on the FIFA World Cup 2022 Finals will be hosted in Qatar later in the year. Following the Super Eagles’ 2-1 defeat to Mexico’s El Tri in the friendly match on Sunday, ThinkAkwaIbom brings you the match goals and highlights.

The West Africans were thrashed 4-0  by the Concacaf country at the Los Angeles Coliseum in their last match, after fielding a team dominated by Nigeria Professional Football League players.

Venue

The game was played in the United States at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Mexico vs Nigeria team

Gerardo Martino, the Mexican coach, fielded a squad of 38 players in this morning’s match. The majority of whom will be in Qatar in 2022, so anyone who is not among the 38 players called up is unlikely to compete in the World Cup.

Although the 38-man squad called up for the friendlies by Mexico didn’t have veterans like Javier Hernandez or Miguel Layun. It paraded Arsenal youngster Marcelo Flores joins Wolves’ Raul Jimenez as the two Premier League members in the squad.

While his Nigerian counterpart, who was on his first assignment, had a depleted team with regulars such as Captain Ahmed Musa, Osihem, Samuel Chukwueze, and Zaidu Sanusi all withdrawing from the Super Eagles friendly against Mexico.

Jose Peseiro selected several uncapped players and regulars such as Aribo, Awaziem, Ajayi, Iwobi, Troost-Ekong, Lookman, and Simon for the Nigeria squad.

Samson Tijani of RB Salzburg and Cyriel Dessers of Feyernoord, fresh from a solid performance in the Europa Conference League final, made their first appearance caps.

Match Highlights

The Mexicans kicked off the game at 1:00 a.m. (WAT). They took the lead in the 12th minute when Gimenez hit the ball past goalkeeper Uzoho. In the 53rd minute, a Nigeria counter-attack resulted in a Cyriel Dessers header that drove past Cota to tie the game. Troost-Ekong miskicked a cross from the six-yard box, sending it into his own net to make it 2-1 after Gallardo’s cross. The match ended in the 90th minute.

FRANCIS UZOHO 7/10

The Omonia Nicosia goalkeeper made three vital saves in the first half. He was not at fault for the two goals conceded by his side.

CHIDOZIE AWAZIEM 6/10

Started as part of a back three, but moved to right-back after the break. Awaziem put up a strong performance in the game.

LEON BALOGUN 6/10
Unlucky to score an own goal in the second half. Did well against a strong Mexican attack.

SEMI AJAYI 6/10
Not really at his best in the first half, but recovered well after the break. Showed he could hold his own against a strong side.

CALVIN BASSEY 8/10
What a performance from the Rangers man. He was at his marauding best in the game and set up Cyriel Dessers for Nigeria’s only goal.

INNOCENT BONKE 4/10

Struggled to cope with the pace of the Mexicans and was duly replaced after the break by Sani Faisal.

JOE ARIBO 7/10

Struggled a bit in the first half, but improved after the break. His combination with Alex Iwobi turned things around for the Super Eagles in the second half.

ALEX IWOBI 8/10

The Everton man was lively all through the game. It was one of his best games for the Super Eagles.

MOSES SIMON 6/10

Came alive after he was moved to an attacking role in the second half.

TEREM MOFFI 6/10
A lively display from the Lorient forward. Unlucky not to get a goal before his substitution.

CYRIEL DESSERS 7/10
Scored Nigeria’s only goal of the game. Showed he can excel at the international level.

Replaced Innocent Bonke after the break. Put up a good display on his international debut.

The Enyimba striker took the place of Terem Moffi in the 73rd minute. He showed flashes of brilliance following his introduction.
