Aspirants running for political office often underestimate the importance of social media and its ability to help or hurt their campaigns. The world of social media is constantly changing, and with it, the way candidates must campaign to win office. Gone are the days of dodgy dealings being hidden from the public – now everything is out in the open, and a single tweet can make or break a career. In order to be successful in the digital age, political hopefuls need to employ someone who knows how to handle their social media accounts in a way that will portray them in the best light possible. So what makes a good social media manager?

Although there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, the qualities that make a good social media handler will vary depending on the aspirant and their goals. However, there are a few general qualities that are essential for any social media handler. The first is the ability to write well. This is important because social media posts need to be engaging and interesting in order to get people to read them. The second skill is knowledge of the aspirant’s achievements and manifestos. A social media handler should be able to talk about the aspirant’s manifestos in a way that is engaging and provides information that potential voters would be interested in. The third skill is creativity. They need to be able to create content that is both interesting and engaging, while also staying on the brand. A good social media handler also understands the importance of responding to social media users in a good manner. They should be able to quickly address any concerns or questions that the followers and others may have. Additionally, they should be able to track and analyze data to see how well the aspirant’s social media campaigns are performing.

Sadly, as we get closer to the 2023 elections, it’s evident that online campaigning is in a bad state. For example, if you visit Facebook, you’ll find all sorts of mudslinging content being circulated in the name of campaigning. This type of content does nothing but harm our political discourse and causes division among the people.

It’s unfortunate that things have come to this. A few days ago, whiles handlers of some gubernatorial candidates in Akwa Ibom state were busy attacking and mudslinging opponents of their candidates. However, a particular candidate’s team did something different. They kicked started their principal’s campaign with a beautiful official picture. This picture went viral instantly and drew no negative comments or reactions.

As a social media handler for a political candidate, it’s important to stay focused on promoting your candidate. Brand promotion is key for any social media handler working on a political campaign. Attacks and blackmails against the opponent’s brand are a distraction and will only lead to followers abandoning the campaign and killing people’s interest in your candidate. Stay focused on promoting your candidate and stay away from negative campaigning.

If you want to be a successful social media manager, you need to know how to connect and engage with people, leverage monitoring and listening tools, and align your insights with your brand’s goals.
